Nasty Nappy Rash

On Monday I was letting Matty "air dry" after a change and I noticed blood dripping out of his bum! Boy can that freak a new mommy out! So we called the pediatrician and made an appointment. He doesn't think it's a yeast infection after all, just a really nasty rash. He gave us some prescription cream (which cost $50 by the way ... it better work!!) and suggested I avoid dairy for a week. He didn't seem convinced, but thought it could possibly be an allergic reaction to milk. Hmmm. Poor little guy. He is just not himself. Today he would not fall asleep unless I was holding him. He needs some extra TLC to get this rash cleared up. I feel so bad every time he needs a diaper change. Any mommies out there have experience with this? I could use some reassurance and advice.

When Natalie was a baby, I didn't use baby wipes, because they were harsh and made her rashes worse. I kept a pile of baby washclothes handy, and would wet one down and microwave it for a few seconds so it was warm. We also used Aquaphor as a barrier against the wetness, but that would probably be for after the bad rash is gone. but it works really well for keeping rashes away.

I am also very cautious with the baby wipes. I only use them if the baby is really soiled. I learned that from my years as a peds/nicu nurse. Also, I suggest continuing to let the bum open to air when possible. My butt cream of choice is the Boudreaux's Butt paste. Two kids and never a diaper rash!

Congrats on your little cutie, Erin! Both my boys had nasty rashes as newbies...freak ultra- sensitive skin! I like Desitin (but NEVER use any 'creamy' stuff, it doesn't contain the amount of zince oxide that you really need to keep moisture out). I can't believe they get away with selling that stuff. Read the labels...the more zinc oxide, the better. Also, this may sound strange, but blow dry his butt on low and far enough away so you don't burn him. Do it every day after bathtime and then slather with your diaper cream. You'll notice the skin get tougher and almost heal right before your eyes. For kids with normal skin, this is probably extreme, but when you have one with skin sensitive enough to bleed than it works like a charm. I also gave up baby wipes when the boys had rashes.

Ugh! That sounds really nasty. Jenna makes her own wipes since she is already using cloth diapers. Email her about where she gets her solution. As far as creams, my favorite is the Original Desitin, it has 40 percent zinc oxide. I used to use it before every nap and at bedtime as a just in case measure. Now that my kids are older, I only use it when I have a need. I've used all of the things people have mentioned, diaper rash is no fun. I really hope he doesn't have a milk allergy!

I haven't had any terrible diaper rashes, but I have had two kids with dairy allergies... and it sucks. Do you know how much food we eat that has dairy products? A LOT! Caden was a really bad spitter upper whenever I'd "accidentally" have a piece of cheese and then nurse him. With Jacob, I started formula feeding him at 6 months and he could only have the special no dairy/no soy formula. Caden has grown out of it, but still no dairy for the little guy. I hope it's just a bad daiper rash and not a dairy allergy. Oh, we also used washcloths for the first month or so, too.

Sage has never had a diaper rash...but we slugged through dairy protein allergies...Talk to me if that is what they decide it is...Andrea, from home group, has too...

Hey Erin! I use Boudreaux's Butt Paste when Ben's bottom is even just a little pink and it seems to work wonders. Ben never had a big problem with diaper rashes, but I hear that letting their little bottoms air out is one of the best things you can do -- so it looks like you're on the right track. Poor guy...

Sorry, that's certainly no fun.

Not sure if you're willing to try it, but disposable diapers do an awesome job pulling away the wetness. We didn't make it very long with cloth diapers (1 day) so I applaud your resolve!

Sounds like you've already gotten a lot of great advice already. I also use Buttpaste and love it. The only other bit of advice I have is too look out for the kind of detergent you use and for fabric softeners. I don't know if you wash any of your diapers at home, or if you use fabric softener, but I have had a bad reaction to it since I was a baby. My mom said that once she stopped using fabric softeners my rashes went away.
